***英文報紙導讀*** 資料來源 (Source)/China Post 剪報日期 (Date)/November, 02, 2000 報紙導讀製作/李旻宜 (Minyi Jo Lee) 英文科實習老師 導讀製作日期/November, 25, 2000 "cause of SIA crash still unclear" By Lau Mei-san and Agencies Source from: China Post Nov. 2, 2000, Edition 1, Special to The China Post The mishap of the Singapore Air-lines (SIA) plane has shattered not only the nearly perfect safety record of the flagship carrier in Southeast Asia, but also hearts of many family members of the deceased. At least 79 people have been confirmed dead in the mysterious crash of the Boeing 747-400 jetliner bound for Los Angeles, according to the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA). CAA's Deputy Director-General Chang Kuo-cheng, in giving the figures, said that of the 179 passengers and crew, 56 people suffering from burns and bone fractures were still in hospital. However, 44 people including the pilot and two co-pilots, miraculously escaped from the crash with barely a scratch. The fortunate survivors included a newly-married Taiwan couple who were planning to go to Los Angeles for their honeymoon by taking the ill-fated SQ006. The casualties involved residents from 18 countries, including 55 from Taiwan, 47 Americans, 11 Singaporeans, 11 Indians, eight Malaysians, five Indonesians four Mexicans, four Britons, and others from Thailand, New Zealand, Vietnam, Australia, Canada, Cambodia, Germany, Japan, Philippines, Ireland and Spain. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed condolences to the victims and said help to the family members would be offered at the ROC offices in respective countries. The accident happened at the Chiang Kai-shek Airport late Tuesday night. Witnesses said the plane fell from the sky shortly after takeoff and burst into flames upon hitting the ground. A passenger on board another airplane recorded the collision with a viewcam which showed that parts of the ill-fated plane were still burning vigorously in heavy rains. Initial reports said the plane had experienced some sort of windshear upon takeoff, and the fell flat to the ground, breaking into three parts and bursting into flames. Another possibility, however, is that the flight might have hit construction equipment while taking off from a runway closed for repairs. ※ at least: 至少 ※ confirm: (v.) 確定;確認 (n.) confirmation ※ cause: (n.) 原因 / (v.) 至使… cause + to V. You can do it; it just takes time! l DON'T just listen---your tongue won't get any exercise that way. Talk too! l DO practice short conversation in English with friends, even if they are the same simple questions and answers. l DON'T say you can't learn because there are no opportunities to practice. Find one and talk. l DO speak out, even if you can't say it perfectly. Communication is your main goal. l DON'T worry too much about grammar and trying to speak perfectly. If you make a mistake, you'll learn something that will make you better next time! Tips for Improving Your English l When learning new vocabulary, don't just memorize a list of Words. Instead, try to make five sentences using each new word. Then use the new word as often as you can the first day you learn it. This way you will remember new words much longer. l Practice sounds you know are difficult--- the "th" sound for example. Choose words that begin with "th" and repeat them over and over again until you are comfortable with them. Let's try! This, that, those, them, think, thought, through, thin, thick. l When someone is talking in English, listen for the main point. If you hear a word you don't understand, ignore it and keep listening. If you stop and think about the word, you will miss everything else the person is saying!
